Comfort without Compromise

Well now Fujitsu, using technology from Willcom Inc, have come up with a solution that could make laptops and other small devices less attractive to thieves and will render your laptop batteries absolutely useless if it does fall into unscrupulous hands.
“As consumers are placing greater emphasis on the design aspect of their mobile device, our new NB200 responds to this demand and offers a perfect balance of portability, quality and usability without compromising any of them,” said Wong Wai Meng, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Toshiba PA3383U-1BRS battery ’s Computer Systems Division. “The smaller devices are, the more consumers value the design aspect. We very much took this into account; the new Toshiba NB200 represents an elegant design statement.”
The comparison to Dell isn't entirely fair, because Dell Inspiron 6000 battery is pushing the more expensive solid state drives in both its Lattitude and Adamo laptops. But it's worth nothing that HP also cut costs by pairing an AMD Athelon Neo processor with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD graphics card instead of relying on Intel's Core 2 Duo processor. The result is a capable media center at the expensive of battery life, because Intel's solution runs cooler.
Then Intel will have to contend with other challenges, including graphics chips from Nvidia (NVDA). In a recent conversation, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang declared: "The $1,000-plus notebook Toshiba Satellite L100 battery is over." The company is jazzing up netbooks with its Ion platform, which pairs Intel's bare-bones $40 Atom processor chip with a robust Nvidia graphics adapter. My prediction is that the Ion platform will prove Huang's point, leading to even more powerful executive-class notebooks with racy graphics, inexpensive microprocessors, and sub-$1,000 price tags.
Port selection on the A605 is good for an ultra-portable notebook, including three USB ports, VGA, LAN, audio jacks, and eSATA through a combo port. While HDMI or DisplayPort might be handy, many business users still use VGA for projectors and it is more than capable for connecting the notebook Toshiba Satellite L10 battery to a secondary monitor. The bottom of the notebook also features a docking connector, for further port expansion.
Therefore, the first netbook has to be the so-called $100 laptop: the OLPC (One Laptop per Child). The OLPC, with its 366MHz, AMD Geode GX2-500 CPU, 128MBs of RAM and, this is the important part, 802.11g Wi-Fi networking. It's also noteworthy that today's OLPC runs XO 8.2 a Linux distribution with the Sugar interface.

Many laptops today can run off two batteries

This isn't my formal review, but I'm going on record to say that I love this keyboard. It has wide, flat keys similar to the ones I've come to dig on the Gateway UC7807u and HP Mini 1000. A critical difference: The keys slope down, creating a little lip for your fingers to tell when you've pressed each key. And a tiny touch-inductive control panel consisting of basic multimedia shortcuts lines the top.
Many laptops today can run off two batteries. When the juice from the primary laptop battery runs dry, the auxiliary kicks in. In most cases, the primary battery comes with the laptop; the second is an optional purchase.
These mini notebooks aren't meant to be a primary computer, the way a laptop can be. They run on less powerful processors than Sony VGP-BPS2A battery; lack an internal optical drive; and are primarily designed with Web browsing, e-mail, and basic office productivity tasks in mind.
In battery life tests, the R610 wins back a couple of points, lasting approximately 3 hours on a charge. For a larger all-purpose machine, that's fairly average.
"What [ChangeWave's] data shows is that consumer sentiment is improving, and will allow Apple A1079 battery to sustain support for its value proposition," concluded Abramsky.
Whether Apple actually wants to compete with Acer and Asus is another matter. It could just use the more modern CULV technology to redo the kludge that is the MacBook Air.
I've been asked a reasonable question: "How big a screen means you're not a netbook Samsung R45-K00D battery any more?" The answer, of course, is that it depends how you define a netbook. And there are at least three key definitions.
For Ben Heckendorn, that size evolution came too late for some models — but with a little creative engineering, he's figured out how to give yesterday's computers today's form factor.
Whether you're away from the office for an hour, a day or a week, the last thing you want to do when you get back is fumble with a slew of cables in order to get your notebook Samsung R45-K006 battery connected. A docking station can make it a lot quicker and easier to reconnect to your wired network, human-size keyboard and mouse, easy-on-the eyes external monitor, printer and other peripherals.

NEWP has announced that next Thursday, May 7, 2009, the company will release results for its first quarter ended April 4, 2009

An alternative to a PC netbook is an Apple MacBook. The software it comes with will make it easy to manage her digital life — photos, video, e-mail, etc. Plus, the magnetic power cord is handy if she has small children running around the house. It simply disconnects from the computer with a slight tug, meaning the laptop battery doesn’t come crashing to the floor.
See, it's a sad (and expensive) fact of life: You're lucky to get 18-24 months from a Dell NT379 battery before it loses a good chunk of its charge capacity (meaning it no longer powers your laptop for as long as it used to).
The typical netbook weighs about 3 pounds, has a 9- to 10-inch screen, and costs $300 to $400. But which ones truly rate? Consumer Reports tested six netbooks to find out. All of them performed well enough at Web surfing and e-mail, but there are some major differences in areas such as ergonomics and Dell IM-M150261-FR battery life.
"Large businesses and government agencies rely on the availability of information, and its loss can have a profound impact, including lower employee productivity and delayed customer service intervals, as well as brand and financial implications," said Nancy Gofus, senior vice president - global business products, Verizon.
"Our newly expanded suite of remote backup and restore services delivers cost-effective solutions that ease the burden on IT departments by providing an automated means of storing and accessing critical data and offering an important business-continuity tool."
"We are proud that Gartner has recognized Stonesoft in the network IPS appliances market," said Paul Johnson, president of Stonesoft Inc. "We believe this evaluation validates the increasing awareness of the strengths of the StoneGate IPS solution. Our commitment is to deliver the next generation technologies needed to optimize the security, availability and manageability of today's critical networks."
The IBM Power Rewards(1) program offers money for migration services or software to customers that switch from competitive systems to IBM 02K6769 battery. Customers can use the migration services to move workloads running on Sun SPARC-based servers to IBM's AIX, Linux, or i operating environments.
"As traditional Dell HD438 battery appliance-based security solutions continue to become more complex, companies look for more cost-effective, high-performing and scalable ways to manage their security infrastructure," said Jim Freeze, Crossbeam's chief marketing officer.
"Crossbeam's approach to security consolidation and virtualization has created increasing demand for our X-Series platform. The ability to easily provision and scale best-of-breed security applications within a consolidated and virtualized infrastructure is a major advancement for the industry and a competitive advantage for Crossbeam."
Newport Corporation (Nasdaq: NEWP) has announced that next Thursday, May 7, 2009, the company will release results for its first quarter ended April 4, 2009. The company also said President and Chief Executive Officer Robert J. Phillippy and Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer Charles F. Cargile will host an investor conference call that day at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time (2:00 p.m. Pacific time) to review the company's financial results and business outlook.

Acer aims to be one of the top five smart-phone makers within five years

“We intend to have devices that will take advantage of multiple platforms. One of the pain points for users around the world is ‘how do I basically port my environment from one device to another?’
“Because we have a suite of products in the mobile-data space that covers the whole spectrum, we can offer synchronisation between all devices.”
Acer is planning to release up to ten mobile phones before the year is out, though most of them are likely to use Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software.
Acer officially announced its smart-phone ambitions at the Mobile World Congress trade show in February. The announcement came nearly a year after the company acquired Taiwanese handset maker, E-Ten. Aspire 1660 battery 's first phones--the ones shipping in several weeks--will use Microsoft's ( MSFT - news - people ) Windows Mobile operating system and feature widgets for quick access to the Web and e-mail. The line, called Tempo, currently includes four handsets, including several touch-screen models. Executives have said that Acer aims to be one of the top five smart-phone makers within five years.
I count AC adapters. When I walk into a Starbucks the first thing I check out is not the blend of the day, but the number (and the brand) of the laptop batteries being used by the fellow java chuggers, along with if they are plugged into the limited wall sockets.
So here we are in New York for the first leg of Acer 2010 battery 's seasonal refresh. The Taiwanese PC company is making a really big deal of the line-up, 20 products grouped into three areas - notebooks / netbooks / and all-in-one PCs and slotted into three brands: Acer, Gateway (Packard Bell in Europe) and eMachines.
Have you ever wondered why computer Aspire 2012 batteries do not last as long as you want them to? Go figure: if gadgets-on-the-go (a.k.a. notebooks and netbooks) cannot last that long on the road without plugging them to an electric socket, it severely limits the power of mobile computing.
At one inch thick, the new netbooks are sleeker than Acer's other Aspire Ones. They also have "multi-gesture" touchpads that let users page through documents and enlarge Web pages with the flick of a finger.
One model, with an 11.6-inch screen, is larger than Acer's current offerings. Acer says this netbook Acer battery 2013, with its high-definition screen and Dolby sound software, is particularly suited to watching videos.
Acer's interest in the country shows the growing importance of the Chinese market because of its number of potential subscribers, especially as the mobile market is expected to see a decline this year. While the majority of Chinese subscribers use low-end cell phones for calling and texting, there's a growing demand for sophisticated handsets capable of surfing the Web, sending e-mail, and playing multimedia files. This demand is expected to increase as the country rolls out its high-speed 3G network.

LiCoxNiyMnzO2 has very high capacity of 180mAh/g and above

LiCoxNiyMnzO2, as a cathode material, has very high capacity of 180mAh/g and above, and is very promising. In addition, it's safe, of low prices, of good charge-discharge performance, and its electrolyte is very compatible. It can be used for small-sized telecoms equipment and small-sized power tools and vehicles, even in field of great power.
But Li-CoxNiyMnzO2 has its shortcomings too. 1) It's very demanding about the conditions under which it is produced. 2) The discharge voltage is low, about 3.55V. 3) The density is lower than that of LiCoO2. 4) It requires high charging voltage, about 4.5V, higher than that of LiCoO2. But Li-CoxNiyMnzO2 indeed has superior high capacity and safety. Therefore it will be a big player in the market in the next few years.

To be fair, Original Sony VGP-BPS13/S Battery’s “Lifestyle PCs” look nothing like what is already available in the market. The Vaio P is unbelievably compact, with dimensions (245x19.8x120 mm) just a tad bigger than a standard business letter envelope and a lot slimmer than your average Tagalog romance paperback. The ultraslim form factor notwithstanding, this baby packs a very vivid widescreen, 8-inch, 1600x768-resolution UWXGA display and an almost full-sized perfectly usable keyboard, all wrapped up in a gorgeous glossy hard plastic chasis so solidly constructed that it doesn’t feel plasticky at all.

Such “regulating power” to help balance grid fluctuations is valuable – recently about $42 an hour for one megawatt’s worth. One car can’t do that much, of course. But 60 cars might – and still remain charged up enough to easily get where they need to go.
The top edge of the Stream includes a Mini-USB port for connecting to a Mac or PC, an SD card slot that supports SD and SDHC cards up to 16GB, and a power adapter connection. Humanware includes a power adapter with the Stream, which is a good thing since the internal battery doesn't charge over USB. The Acer battery TravelMate 2500 reaches full charge in about four hours, offering up to 15 hours of playback time. The battery is also replaceable through a compartment on the back, making it possible to keep multiple batteries on hand or to easily replace old batteries after they wear out.
"When you drive your car at 16 km/h (10 mph), to go faster you just push the accelerator," said Kang. "But if the laptop batteries can't discharge power quickly, there is no acceleration. With this new technology, you can release the power quickly for whatever you need, whether a car or any other application."

Toshiba uses Trusted Platform Modules (TPM) on all its laptops

Indeed, life gets complicated, increasingly full of responsibilities and short on free time. Those same kids don't take the car to get fixed, prepare your taxes, or change the laptop batteries in the smoke alarms around the house. You and I do that stuff. But that's exactly the reason to get into new technologies and doohickeys.
They save time, they open up ways to do things more easily, they put hard-to-find information at our fingertips, and they reach people when and where they're hard to normally reach.

The research team hopes one day to use microbial fuel cells as innovative household power generators that look like aquariums but are filled with water and microscopic bacteria instead of fish. When the bacteria inside are fed, the power generator -- referred to as a "biogenerator" -- would produce electricity.

Designed for a broad range of readers

It seems Microsoft's ad agency put anonymous ads on Craigslist and other Web sites seeking participants in “market research” on laptop batteries.

We use relatively simple language so the report can be useful to as broad a range of readers as possible, enhanced by a glossary.

After all, investors, government regulators, journalists and many other people have a great interest in the imminent huge deployment of small self-powered electronic and electrical devices. It will eventually reach hundreds of billions of products yearly, including electronically enhanced drug packs, magazines, disposable medical testers and much more besides.

For the more technical, there are many new summary tables and diagrams comparing parameters required and achieved. The parameters, including costs, and the applications are compared and the work of many suppliers is evaluated. No other report on this subject is as broad ranging or up to date.

The main emphasis is on what will needed and possible, not on rehearsing the story of traditional cylindrical, laptop battery and mobile phone Sony VGP-BPS2A batteries. Here we see the future.

Why? Because it’s so darn convenient. You pick up your phone from the coffee table, wake it up and it’s instantly online as it recognises your home network.

Education poses a challenge to tech companies

Its slice of the stimulus bill pales in comparison to energy, health care and broadband, but education poses a challenge to tech companies. The budget allots $650 million for schools to purchase technology and carefully pour it into individual schools - from improved technology Sony VGP-BPS13A battery, for teaching and administrative use to community outreach.
The dizzying amounts have tech giants jockeying to land government contracts, the first expected to be awarded in the next few weeks. IBM (IBM), General Electric (GE), Cisco Systems (CSCO), Intel (INTC) and some well-positioned start-ups are among suitors poised to capitalize.
"Technology is great, people are better," says Mary Cullinane, Microsoft's director of innovation in U.S. Education. The company counts among its works a "school of the future" in west Philadelphia. Students there have laptops Sony VGP-BPS13B battery, and smart cards for access to lockers and building entrances, for example.
It allocates tens of billions of dollars for tech upgrades to energy ($4.5 billion for smart grids), health care ($20 billion for electronic medical records), broadband deployment and education.
Software giant SAP America has carved a considerable niche in the market and offers a potential template HID Kits . It foresees modernizing the business system infrastructure for current customers - ranging from statewide school systems in Texas and Pennsylvania to colleges such as Purdue University and MIT - so that administrators can better manage budgets."It is analogous to improving an existing highway," says Pat Bakey, SAP's executive vice president of strategic industries.
Cisco, meanwhile, hopes federal contracts will help it extend the reach of its 21st Century schools initiative on the Gulf Coast, which brought high-speed Internet access, laptops VGP-BPS13 battery, digital cameras, PDAs and more to 21 K-12 schools in post-Katrina Louisiana and Mississippi.
The biggest federal public works project since World War II offers tantalizing possibilities for the struggling tech market. President Obama's staggering $787 billion economic stimulus package, passed in February, could be a financial oasis DM 500s — especially for an industry facing a precipitous drop in tech spending by economically ravaged corporations and consumers.

There are four handy buttons at the top edge

This laptop is great for an all rounder notebook with powerful processing and mid-range multimedia capabilities. Ideal for basic computer usage, the Advent 5431 comes in high gloss finish with imprint design that adds to its stylish and smart looks.
Incorporated with the NVidia GeForce Go7400VX delivers stunning, true-to-life visuals, incredibly smooth video playback and exceptional graphics performance?from personal video recording and high definition TV, to enthusiast-level gaming.
The keyboard feels cramped but nicely springy. Its tiny trackpad is multitouch-sensitive, meaning that you can scroll by dragging two fingers, or magnify or shrink Web pages, photos and documents by pinching or spreading two fingers
There are four handy buttons at the top edge, two of which you can assign to favorite programs. Nice touch; the more you can accomplish without using the infinitesimal trackpad, the more efficient you get.
Yet if netbook Asus F3Sv battery prices continue the other way and keep dropping, Microsoft falls victim to the thrifty combination of Linux and ARM, which has said that 10 ARM-based netbooks Asus F3T battery are likely to hit stores by the end of this year. Says analyst Cherry: "If the price gap between Windows and Linux-based netbooks widens, buyers may stop caring about the operating system."
Perhaps the most telling observation is that in spending hands-time with systems using all three processors, we didn't find any large difference in our anecdotal usage experience (although only the HP dv2, with more RAM and better graphics, dared to run Windows Vista).
All were perfectly adequate at providing a good Netbook Asus F5 battery experience, which leads us to repeat our often-used mantra that Netbook nirvana requires one's expectations to be appropriately modest. They're great for Web surfing, sending e-mail, working on office documents, maybe some light multimedia playback, and not much else--but that's what most of us primarily use our laptops for anyway.
Equipped with an Intel Pentium Dual-Core T3200 processor, it has a clock speed of 2,000 Mhz. Its RAM is 1,024 MB and its hard disk memory is a modest 120 GB. The Advent laptop Asus F5N battery’s powerful processor ensures that the user is satisfied with the efficient running of the programmes.
Netbook has become as trendy a word as "cloud" and analysts predict sales are will grow 65 percent this year from 2008's totals. But the netbook Asus F5M battery pricing game is getting complicated as OEMs try to simultaneously add features and keep prices down. The bad news for Microsoft? No matter whether the OEMs stick to $300 price points or push higher, Microsoft's overall profits are vulnerable, say industry analysts.

It was no April Fool's joke--selling small laptop computers as little as $50 !

One of the earliest signs of this shift came Apr. 1, when AT&T began selling small laptop computers Dell XPS M1330 battery in Atlanta and Philadelphia for as little as $50 to people who also signed up to get at-home and mobile broadband services for two years. It was no April Fool's joke.
AT&T, the biggest U.S. phone company, is "very pleased with the early results" and is considering introducing the offer nationwide, says David Haight, vice-president of business development for emerging device organization at AT&T. He wouldn't provide details on the results so far. Rival Verizon Wireless plans to offer small, inexpensive laptops Dell XPS M1210 battery called netbooks to customers this quarter. Other carriers are expected to follow suit.
There are more than 200 on the road in the United States, some in the hands of celebrity customers like George Clooney and Michael Dell.
Tesla has been financed with dot-com money. Elon Musk, who briefly attended Queen's University, founded e-commerce company PayPal, which was sold to eBay in 2002 for $1.5-billion. Musk's money was in the first round of financing in Tesla in 2004.
But this only goes so far, so what follows are my observations and opinions based on using five assorted netbooks. The vast majority of computer Dell Vostro 1710 battery reviews deal with new machines and their assorted features. Not this article. This is more about living with a netbook – well after the new toy high has dissipated.
"Consumer laptops are designed to sit on a desk or table in a home environment and not be taken out of that environment too often, whereas a business notebook is built to be regularly carried around, used in many different locations and treated in a more rugged way," says HP Australia's market development manager for commercial notebooks, Janet Bradburn.
This tells the browser to resize its window to the standard netbook Dell XX327 battery resolution. Windows users will find that Internet Explorer interprets this differently, if at all.
The frame of a business laptop is often cast from an advanced material such as magnesium alloy, which offers durability and is lightweight. Some models encase the internal circuitry in a magnesium alloy "roll cage" for added protection.
Well, how about most anyone with computing needs that extend much beyond e-mail, Web surfing, office-type tasks, and listening to MP3s? Netbook processors (mostly Intel Atom) are compact and energy efficient, yet they're feeble compared with the Core 2 Duo or AMD Turion dual-core processors that grace even slightly larger laptops XX337 battery.
The 10-inch netbook screens are generally 1,024-by-600 resolution, or thereabouts. Their keyboards are all less than full size, some painfully so. Many can't even run Photoshop (though they should fare better with Photoshop Elements), and they are stumped by most of our other performance tests as well. If you regularly edit photos or videos, a netbook will likely prove a ticket to frustration. As for 3D gaming, fuhgeddaboutit.

The New laptop will provide full colour depth and refresh

Citing their paper published in Nature Nanotechnology, Cui said the increased Li-Ion battery capacity was made possible though a new type of anode that utilises silicon nanowires. Traditional Li-Ion Acer Aspire 5610 batteries use graphite as the anode, which limits the amount of lithium -- which holds the charge -- that can be held in the anode, and therefore limits battery life.
Customers may continue to use the laptop computers safely by turning the system off, ejecting the battery, and using the AC adapter and power cord to power the system until the replacement battery is received, the company said.
The number of cells is not the end of the story, however, because two different 6 cell Acer Aspire 5630 batteries can have significantly different run times based on another number: the Watt-hour (Wh) rating (the higher the better). As with most things in the computer business, not all manufacturers publish the specifications for the battery the same way. Some publish the number of cells, while others publish a Watt-hour rating and still others publish neither.
A casual laptop user may see laptop Acer Ferrari 1000 battery life jump from three hours to four-and-a-half hours by switching to the light-powered screens, Jepsen said. The new displays will provide full colour depth and refresh rates that are comparable to conventional laptop screens.
The screens pull as much ambient light from sources as possible, but the technology may not work effectively for users watching DVD movies in dark rooms, Jepsen said.
HP decided it wasn't going to use the power management settings that shipped with Vista, Wozniak said. The company came up with its own set of power management settings for Vista laptops, allowing users to select different power settings, such as "power saver" or "high performance," that strike a balance between processing power and Acer Ferrari 1000-5612 battery life. Lenovo is likewise using its own power management technologies honed over several years, said Howard Locker, director of new technology at Lenovo.
They turned to the capacitor, which was invented nearly 300 years ago. Schindall explains, "We made the connection that perhaps we could take an old product, a capacitor, and use a new technology, nanotechnology, to make that old product in a new way."
Rechargable and disposable batteries use a chemical reaction to produce energy. "That's an effective way to store a large amount of energy," he says, "but the problem is that after many charges and discharges ... the Acer Ferrari 1100 battery loses capacity to the point where the user has to discard it."

Tips on maintaining your laptop's battery

Lithium-ion Toshiba PA3615U-1BRS batteries are a major source of mobile power for laptops are lightweight and small, but they pose a threat due to overheating caused by overcharging of electrodes. Researchers at Tonen Chemical, an affiliate of ExxonMobil Chemical based in Tokyo, Japan, have achieved success in creating a polymer separator that plays an active role in preventing the overheating of batteries.
Tips for maintaining laptop batteries
While we are discussing laptop PA3615U-1BRM batteries, here are a few tips to keep your power investment in top shape:
Make sure the battery is discharged and used frequently. When charging, make sure you fully charge it.
IDG News service and SlashGear report that Toshiba is initiating another series of PABAS115 battery recalls due to risk of fire.
The models that may be affected are Satellite A100/A105 and Tecra A7 and two accessory/replacement batteries, model numbers PA3451U-1BRS and PA3399U-2BRS.
Here’s a quote from an article at Technology Review:
Unlike present separators, which break down at a little above 150 ºC, the new Tonen material stays intact up to 190 ºC. By preventing massive electrical shorting, the new separator could prevent the accelerated heating that leads to explosions, said Peter Roth, program manager for advanced technology development at Sandia National Laboratories, in Albuquerque, NM. Sandia is now testing the safety features of the new separator.
This link to Toshiba’s support site can help you check if your PA3614U-1BRP battery is affected or not. This recent recall follows a major set of recalls made last year. Here are a few pointers for getting the most of your laptop PABAS103 battery:Dim your screen to the lowest setting. Disable auto Bluetooth and Wi-Fi network detection (if you don’t need the Internet).Turn off software (like the Hibernate or Stand-by mode in Windows XP) and turn off scheduled tasks.

That’s a lithium-ion battery cooking out

He said he threw the phone to the ground where it burnt the floor and melted a nearby electrical cord, resulting in the school being evacuated and the Airdrie fire department called in.Shayne’s mother, Tammy Cryderman, said she’s filed a complaint with the Canadian Safety Board because she fears the product could end up hurting someone else. Tammy Cryderman said her son complained that when he was using the phone, the screen began to get blurry and fuzzy. Shayne informed his mother that it began sparking and making high-pitched squealing noises before it started to melt and puff up in his hand.
Calls to the Apple media relations line seeking comment were not immediately returned.A technician at Apple’s telephone help center said he was unable to comment, but noted that Cryderman’s case was extremely rare.A representative who answered the phone at the Apple Store in Calgary’s Market Mall deferred a call for comment to Apple’s media line, but also noted that it was not common for iPhones to combust like how Cryderman’s claims.Ryan MacKay, a service technician at WestWorld Computers in Calgary, said he’s never personally seen a severe case like the Cryderman’s before.
Although WestWorld doesn’t service iPhones, they do deal with Apple/Macintosh computers and iPods, which also commonly use lithium-ion Dell Vostro A860 Battery Original . .“Google‘exploding lap tops’ and you’ll see lots of video of lap tops going up in smoke.” Although he had no dealings with Cryderman’s phone, he did say in his experience it sounded like a battery issue.
“They are superior in a lot of regards to the Nickel Metal Hydride … and all the other [batteries] they used to use because they can hold way more power. In 2006, millions of Sony manufactured lap top Original Dell WU841 Battery 56WH were recalled after it was discovered that in some rare cases, microscopic metals made during manufacturing could cause a short-circuit if they came in contact with other parts of the Dell D044H battery cell, potentially leading to a fire. Because Shayne’s iPhone was on a pre-paid plan and was a device he had bought second hand, there were some delays in getting a straight answer from Apple in regards to replacing the phone, Tammy Cryderman said.
“Now [Apple] said they’ll send a cheque and [will] replace his phone with whatever phone he chooses,” she said.“What I’m trying to do now is see if they can do a recall on these phones for people because if they’re that unsafe, or if it’s a problem with the battery itself, that needs to be corrected before someone really gets hurt.”Both older model iPhones and newer model phones commonly use lithium-ion Dell Vostro A840 Battery Original .An Airdrie high school student was lucky to avoid injury after he claims his Apple iPhone internally combusted and began smoking, hissing and expanded in his hand before he threw it to the ground.
Shayne Cryderman, a Grade 11 student at George McDougall High School, said he was texting on the phone at school March 23 when it suddenly got hot and began expanding. “It [expanded], it got really big and then it started to smoke a bit and then combusted inside,” “There’s been exploding laptops Original Dell T749D Battery 56WH for the last few years. It’s basically because of the way lithium-ion as a technology works.
Cryderman, 16, said.“I would have never even thought something like that could happen,” she said. “You don’t think of these things when you buy this technology.“You don’t want to see someone else have this happen and have it be something a lot more serious than what happened with my son.”
“That’s very scary,” she said. “People need to be aware and cautious about it.”The iPhone in question was an older generation model and not a newer 3G version, Shayne noted.
MacKay said he has never seen an iPod or Apple computer suffer a similar fate as Cryderman’s did.“I’ve seen really bubbled up lithium-ion batteries, but that’s just the technology as a whole and the way the lithium-ion batteries work as a class,” MacKay said. “But nothing ever fire related.
“That’s a lithium-ion battery cooking out,” he said.“But having way more power in them makes them way more volatile.During a telephone interview with MacKay, he explained the situation and asked what would likely cause an electrical device to act in a manner like Shayne Cryderman’s. The recall affected many companies who manufacture and selllaptops, including Apple. The mother and son said they have been in contact with Apple representatives about replacing the phone.

The mentioning of limited service life on lithium-ion has caused concern in the battery industry

The mentioning of limited service life on lithium-ion has caused concern in the battery industry and I will need to add some clarifications. Let me explain:
If someone asks how long we humans live, we would soon find out that the longevity varies according to life style and living conditions that exist in different countries. Similar conditions exist with the Dell Studio 1735 Battery Original 56WH batteries, lithium-ion in particular. Since BatteryUniversity bases its information on the feedback from users as opposed to scientific information derived from a research lab, longevity results may differ from manufacturer' specifications. Let's briefly look at the various living conditions of the lithium-ion battery.

If possible, store the
Dell RM791 Battery Original 56WH in a cool place at about a 40% state-of-charge. Some reserve charge is needed to keep the battery and its protection circuit operational during prolonged storage. Avoid keeping the battery at full charge and high temperature. This is the case when placing a cell phone or spare battery in a hot car. Running a laptop computer on the mains has a similar temperature problem. While the battery is kept fully charged, the inside temperature during operation rises to 45°C (113°F).

A large number of lithium-ion batteries for cell phones are being discarded under the warranty return policy. Some failed
Dell KM973 Battery Original 56WH are sent to service centers or the manufacturer, where they are refurbished. Studies show that 80%-90% of the returned batteries can be repaired and returned to service.

All personal computers (and some other electronic devices) contain a battery for memory back up. This battery is commonly a small non-rechargeable lithium cell, which provides a small current when the device is turned off. The PC uses the battery to retain certain information when the power is off. These are the BIOS settings, current date and time, as well as resource assignment for Plug and Play systems. Storage does shorten the service life of the backup battery to a few years. Some say 1-2 years. By keeping the computer connected to the main, albeit turned off, a battery on the PC motherboards should be good for 5-7 years. A PC should give the advanced warning when battery gets low. A dead back-up battery will wipe out the volatile memory and erase certain settings. After

Toshiba Satellite M50 Series battery is replaced, the PC should again be operational.

Removing the battery from the laptop when running on fixed power protects the battery from heat. With the concern of the battery overheating and causing fire, a spokesperson for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises to eject the battery of affected laptops and to run the machines on a power cord. It should be noted that on a power outage, unsaved works will be lost.
The question is often asked, should the laptop be disconnected from the main when not in use? Under normal circumstances, it should not matter with lithium-ion. Once the battery is fully charged, no further charge is applied. However, there is always the concern is malfunction of the AC adapter, the laptop or the battery.

Not only is it better to charge lithium-ion battery at a slower charge rate, high discharge rates also contribute the extra wear and tear. Figure 3 shows the cycle life as a function of charge and discharge rates. Observe the good laboratory performance if the battery is charged and discharged at 1C. (A 0.5C charge and discharge would further improve this rating.)

Permanent capacity loss of lithium-ion as a function of temperature and charge level.
High charge levels and elevated temperatures hasten permanent capacity loss. Improvements in chemistry have increased the storage performance of lithium-ion batteries.

The voltage level to which the cells are charged also plays an important role to longevity. For safety reasons, most lithium-ion cannot exceed 4.20 volts per cell. While a higher voltage boosts capacity, the disadvantage is lower cycle life. Figure 2 shows the cycle life as a function of charge voltage
There are no remedies to restore lithium-ion once worn out. A momentary improvement in performance is noticeable when heating up the Dell F287H G069H Battery Original . This lowers the internal resistance momentarily but the condition reverts back to its former state when the temperature drops. Cold temperature will increase the internal resistance.

The worst condition is keeping a fully charged battery at elevated temperatures, which is the case with running laptop batteries. If used on main power, the battery inside a laptop will only last for 12-18 months. I must hasten to explain that the pack does not die suddenly but begins with reduced run-times.

Longevity of high-power lithium-ion Generally speaking, batteries live longer if treated in a gentle manner. High charge voltages, excessive charge rate and extreme load conditions will have a negative effect and shorten the battery life. This also applies to high current rate lithium-ion batteries.

Some lithium-ion batteries fail due to excessive low discharge. If discharged below 2.5 volts per cell, the internal safety circuit opens and the battery appears dead. A charge with the original charger is no longer possible. Some battery analyzers (Cadex) feature a boost function that reactivates the protection circuit of a failed battery and enables a recharge. However, if the cell voltage has fallen below 1.5V/cell and has remained in that state for a few months, a recharge should be avoided because of safety concerns. To prevent failure, never store the battery fully discharged. Apply some charge before storage, and then charge fully before use.

sacrificing the mouse pad to save space

One of its features, “instant mode”, enables a quick boot up into Sony VGP-BPS2C ’s Xross Media Bar interface and access to music, video, photos and the web — without having to wait for Vista to boot. The webcam, located in the top right-hand corner of the panel, is also pretty cool.
My review unit has a 64GB solid-state drive powered by Intel’s Atom Z520 processors, running at 1.33 GHz. It’s got 2GB of RAM and ships with Windows Vista Home Premium. Models with a 60GB hard drive are also available.
The VGN-P15 has a built-in webcam, as well as noise-cancelling technology and included headphones (only with the VGN-P15G model). Unfortunately, the headphones had disappeared somewhere along the way before I got my review unit so I don’t know what they are like.
As expected with a lightweight machine like this,Sony VGP-BPS2B battery life is short. Sony VGP-BPS2A claims you can get up to three hours of use out of it, but I think that would require sticking to low-power tasks.
Sony VGP-BPL2C ’s ultraportable Vaio VGN-P15G arrived at my desk last week. Measuring 245 by 20 by 120 mm, and weighing in at 599 grams, it resembles a slightly larger than normal pencil case. It would easily slip into your bag or even your pocket.
The tiny machine also has built-in wireless LAN 802.11b/g/Draft n and Bluetooth. It sports two USB ports, a SD card slot, a memory card slot and a display port.
On the downside, sacrificing the mouse pad to save space, to me, was a mistake – I found the stick pointer difficult and annoying to use. I also found the keyboard quite difficult to type on. Sure, it is not meant to be a power-user work machine, though for the occasional email or jotting numbers down while out in the field it may work just fine. But I felt like I spent more time trying to do things on the VGN-P15 and getting annoyed when it didn’t work, rather than actually using it.
The 1600x768 LED display is just over 7 inches wide. Sony VGP-BPL2A says it is an 8-inch screen and this is true if measured diagonally. In my opinion — as cute and light as it is — with a recommended retail price of $2,299.95, the VGN-P15G is quite expensive for what it offers.
To sum up its advantages, the VGN-P15 is cute and lightweight with a nice colour range. It also gets extra points for its surprisingly small charger.

Applicants must show their products are technically feasible

The Zingareviches have vast interests in timber. In the early 1990s, they and Zakhar Smushkin began building what is now Ilim Holdings, based in St. Petersburg, Russia. In 2004, Forbes listed the brothers among the richest Russians. In the '90s, Ilim's legal director was Dmitry Medvedev. In 1999, Medvedev joined Putin's cabinet; last year, he become president. Ilim has prospered.
In 2007, it sold a 50% stake to International Paper (IP) for $620 million. Boris, Mikhail and Smushkin are on Ilim's board.
Attempts to reach Zingarevich through Ilim Group and through Bzinfin's attorney in Geneva were unsuccessful. However, in a statement, Ener1 blames the emergence of this issue on the efforts of a short seller to drive down its share price. It also notes that Boris Zingarevich has "indirect ownership of less than 40%" of its shares.
Gassenheimer says that Zingarevich joined the company "when the two founders ran into financial difficulties... If it were not for Boris, this company would not be alive today. He's been a tremendous partner, a patient investor. It's nice to have someone with this level of patience that is fully committed to the story." He adds that Zingarevich "as a matter of SEC rules...is deemed to 'beneficially own' a majority of our shares" but has no day-to-day role in the company.
And Gassenheimer says that, like many U.S. companies, its investors include Americans and foreigners.
Today, he adds, Ener1 has more than 90 customers (although he won't name them) and 15 programs for automotive or defense applications. Among potential customers: a large European auto maker now testing a laptopbattery pack for a hybrid; another big customer testing an electric-vehicle pack; and a national postal service considering converting vehicles to electric power.
"Dispositive and voting power" over the Ener1 shares held by Ener1 Group is exercised by a board that includes CEO Gassenheimer, Boris Zingarevich, Mikhail Zingarevich (Boris' brother) and Alexei Paramonov.
In any case, Ener1 has survived the first round of the DoE's loan process, which whittled the number of applicants to 25 from 75, and now must pass the DoE's due-diligence vetting.
Applicants must show that their products are technically feasible and their businesses are financially viable. The DOE requires that applicants have manufacturing facilities in the U.S., that engineering integration be done here, and that related costs be paid to American suppliers. The $480 million loan, it's hoped, will come through this year.
In theory, foreign control shouldn't matter to the Department of Energy. However, it wants to foster an American advanced-Toshiba PA3241U PA3241U-1ACA AC Adapter battery industry. The U.S. players now include A123 Systems, founded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Johnson Controls (JCI), which has a joint venture with France's Saft Groupe (SAFT.France). Says Frank Gaffney, president of the Washington-based Center for Security Policy: "We desperately need to be establishing an industrial base in this country for a Toshiba PA3241U-1ACA AC Adapter battery technology... . [But] it's insanity to be building a national Toshiba PA3241U-2ACA AC Adapter battery infrastructure in the pockets of the oligarchs of the past and future Soviet Union." Kevin Kearns, president of the Washington-based U.S. Business & Industry Council, worries that Ener1's DOE-funded expertise could "be sucked out of the company and sent back to Russia." One factor behind such concerns: Advanced Toshiba PA3260E batteries are likely to have military, as well as civilian, uses.
The Ener1 CEO is clearly upset about the low stock price; he blames hedge funds having to sell HEV shares to meet redemptions. Ener1's prospects have never been brighter, he contends, and it has financing alternatives if the loan is denied. For example, it could seek a strategic partnership, like that of Toyota with Panasonic or Johnson Controls with Saft. Gassenheimer says he's been in talks about such deals since Ener1 bought out Delphi.

America Online will close a research and development base in Beijing but keep trying to break into China's market amid the sliding global economy. The Beijing office, which opened in 2007 and has 56 staff, will be shut down by midyear given poor economic circumstances and reorganization plans. But AOL's Web portal for mainland China, launched last year, will continue to operate from the company's Hong Kong regional base. So will AOL sites that are separate from the portal, such as the Chinese version of technology blog Engadget. AOL also launched Web portals in Taiwan and Hong Kong last year, both of which will keep going.

Apple Australia fights trademark battle over 'MacPro'

Records from intellectual property agency IP Australia reveal the history of the trademark "Macpro". Apple had attempted to register the names "Macpro" and "Mac Pro" in May 2006, with the names covering a range of computer hardware, software and equipment such as mobile telephones, microprocessors, cables and modems.
The judge requested in a directions hearing today that information pertaining to the decision which had been made be provided to him so that he could come abreast of the main issues and decide which party was to lay their case before him first.
Apple A1078 is likely to once again argue its point that it was not responsible for the debt incurred by failed Apple A1148 reseller group, Buzzle Operations. Apple had attempted to recoup debts the company had incurred in buying supplies from Apple A1061 following its demise in 2001.
In a note to its 2008 financial statement submitted to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, which showed it earned revenues of $1.6 billion from Australia, Apple acknowledged the upcoming date set for the case to be heard.
Apple had attempted to remove Wily from the liquidator role and to install KPMG — its own financial auditors — to handle the liquidation; however, in 2003 its attempt was rejected by a NSW Supreme Court judge, according to a report by IT channel publication, Australian Reseller News.
Although Macpro Computers had not filed a request to trademark Macpro, it claimed entitlement to it, since it had been actively using it as a trading for a lengthy period. The company was founded in 1983.
Apple filed an appeal in the Federal Court on 4 March of this year after a decision was met by IP Australia on Apple's application to the Macpro trademark which allowed Apple A1185 to use the trademark for some goods and services, but not all which it had requested.
Apple versus Buzzle, Wily In a separate, long-running legal battle, Apple Australia will shortly resume its fight against former reseller Buzzle Operations and its liquidator Andrew Wily. The court date for the hearing at the NSW Supreme Court is set for 27 April.
Wily and Buzzle Operations, which is still in liquidation, had served Apple with a statement of claim "alleging certain amounts are due to Buzzle by virtue of insolvent trading, voidable transactions and related party unfair preference", Apple A1008 Australia reported. The document also revealed that Wily and Buzzle Operations hope to recover $46.6 million from the iconic computer maker, plus damages, interests and legal costs.
Apple's Australian division is currently fighting legal action on two fronts, it was revealed today, with one Federal Court trademark action and a separate case resuming next month against its former reseller, Buzzle Operations.
By March 2001, though, the reseller had gone bust, with Apple alleged to have driven the company's demise by overloading it with Apple stock. Wily, a partner at Armstrong Wily, was appointed as the liquidator in 2001.
However three months later, on August 14, Apple's claim was opposed by the Melbourne-based computer supplier when its lawyers Blake Dawson filed a notice of opposition on the company's behalf.
Buzzle Operations was comprised of seven separate retailers which banded together in 2000 following the dotcom bust to list the company on the Australian Stock Exchange, hoping to raise $100 million in capital. The group aired its plans on an ABC documentary in 2000.
On 17 August 2006, Macpro Computers lodged an application for the word Macpro for computer hardware, software and computer consultancy services. The examination of this application has been deferred.
The thrust of Buzzle and Wily's legal argument is that Apple had breached Australia's Corporations Act by selling stock to the company while allegedly knowing it was insolvent.
In Federal Court, Apple today continued fighting the first tussle, arguing for ownership over the trademark name "MacPro" with Melbourne-based computer equipment supplier Macpro Computers.
Macpro Computers staff were unwilling to discuss the matter with ZDNet.com.au while Apple Australia's spokespeople were unable to be contacted at the time of writing.
Neither Apple nor Wily responded to ZDNet.com.au's calls.

Toshiba's Turn to Reshuffle at the Top

On Mar. 18, Toshiba's president, Atsutoshi Nishida, said that he would step down in June after a four-year run. Nishida will become chairman and pass the company's top executive post to Sasaki, a former nuclear researcher and his hand-picked successor. Nishida said he offered the job to Sasaki, a senior vice-president, two weeks ago. "For a moment, I was hesitant," the 59-year-old Sasaki told a packed conference room at Toshiba's Tokyo headquarters. "There's a huge amount of pressure involved in taking over during this very tough period."Analysts have expressed worries about the company's balance sheet. That's been a recurring theme sinceToshiba Satellite P30 Series bought a controlling stake in Westinghouse from British Nuclear Fuels in late 2006. In a report earlier this month, Goldman Sachs (GS) noted that Toshiba won't likely have trouble finding short-term financing, but it will need to raise cash and lower its debt soon. Toshiba says it's counting on earnings improvements for help in fixing its balance sheet. "We think Toshiba urgently needs to strengthen its finances," wrote Goldman analyst Ikuo Matsuhashi.
Nishida said he regretted that the global financial crisis had derailed his plans to stabilize Toshiba's profits. But he dismissed the notion that he was stepping aside because of the company's recent woes. "As president, I am responsible for the good and bad results of this company," Nishida told reporters. "But that responsibility had nothing to do with this change of management."Three years ago, as head of Toshiba Satellite P35 Series ' s (TSBAa.BE) power business, Norio Sasaki orchestrated the tech conglomerate's $5.4 billion acquisition of Westinghouse's nuclear-power-plant business. Now, as Sasaki prepares to take over the president's post, he will have to show the same willingness to take chances as he tries to help overhaul the company after its biggest-ever expected annual loss.Toshiba Satellite P305 Series is the latest Japanese tech company to reshuffle its top management in an attempt to regain profitability. Earlier this week, Hitachi (HT.BE) replaced its top brass with a more seasoned group of executives to try to pull the company from a nearly $8 billion loss predicted for this fiscal year. Last month, Sony (SNE) CEO Howard Stringer picked a younger team of executives to lead an overhaul of the tech giant's core electronics business and catch up to more nimble software-savvy companies like Apple (APPL), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Microsoft (MSFT), and Nintendo (NTDOY.BE).
You can't blame Sasaki. He inherits the task of turning around a $68 billion tech behemoth that makes everything from memory chips, mobile phones, and refrigerators to nuclear reactors, medical CT scan machines, and elevators. In January,Toshiba Satellite R10 announced a plan to cut costs by 15%, lay off 4,500 temp workers in Japan, and move chip production to countries where labor costs are lower.Sasaki's selection highlights the ascendancy of the company's power and infrastructure division, which he has led. The unit is the company's second-largest, behind electronics, and it's diverse: It has technology for nuclear and thermal reactors, mobile-phone base stations, electrical transformers, and CT scan equipment. In the first nine months of the fiscal year, the unit accounted for a third of overall revenues and was alone among business units in posting an operating profit. In the past decade, electronics and NAND flash memory chips have driven Toshiba's growth, but those units have lost their sparkle. The power and infrastructure unit's strong results will likely buy Sasaki's new team some time as they figure out how to revamp the electronics and semiconductor divisionsneeded soon: more cash, less debtLike many of Japan's tech manufacturers, Toshiba Satellite R15 got blindsided by a strong yen and a sharp slowdown in demand for consumer electronics and tech parts worldwide. In January, the company lowered its annual earnings forecast to a net loss of 280 billion yen ($2.84 billion) for the fiscal year through Mar. 31 from its previous prediction of a profit of 70 billion yen. The loss would be its largest since Toshiba began releasing earnings six decades ago. (Recent news reports have suggested Toshiba could record an operating profit; the company has said the reports aren't "based on any announcement by Toshiba.")

Battery adds depth

"Both players will add experience and depth to our roster," said Charleston Battery coach Mike Anhaeuser.
"Matt has been a solid defender in our league for a long time and knows the league as well as any player out there," Anhaeuser said. "Matt's big and he's physical, and in this league you need a player like that in the middle. He versatile and he still has the pace to play outside if needed."
"Yoshi will bring an attacking flair and some excitement to our wings," Anhaeuser said. "He has some crafty dribbling ability that should cause some problems for opposing teams."
The Charleston Acer Aspire One Series Battery signed veteran defender Matt Bobo and Japanese midfielder Tsuyoshi Yoshitake for the upcoming USL First Division season.
A veteran defender, Bobo, 31, played 79 games for the Silverbacks, recording two goals and two assists. Prior to Atlanta, Bobo played with the Richmond Kickers and the Milwaukee Wave United, where he was a member of the championship team in 2002.

Engineers Double Life of Alkaline Batteries Longer-Lasting Battery

But now, engineers are unveiling a new battery -- called Oxyride -- that boasts almost double the power and life of regular batteries.

"If something lasted twice as long, that maybe means I'll have half as many worries," Stein says. And for him, using it may mean not missing any more great shots.

A Dell Latitude D630 battery continually produces new electrons at the negative terminal from a series of chemical reactions. So the battery essentially acts like a pump, pulling electrons from the negative end of the conducting wire and pushing them into the positive end. A battery only holds a certain amount of reactants, and once those are used up, there can be no more chemical reactions, and the battery is dead.

"If you use this battery in a digital still camera, you'll receive -- minimum -- twice as many photos as compared to alkaline batteries," Brian Kimberlin, of Panasonic Battery Group in Secaucus, N.J., tells DBIS.

BACKGROUND: Matsushita Electric Industrial has developed a battery that delivers 1.5 times the power of a regular alkaline Dell Inspiron 1520 battery, and is cheaper than the lithium batteries used in many electronics devices.

Using a finer, more concentrated material inside the battery, engineers have developed a way to fit more electrolyte -- a key ingredient for carrying electricity -- into the same size battery cell. The new battery is packed with more power and longer life.

By packing Dell Inspiron 6400 batteries with twice as much energy-storing material, engineers have developed a new generation of alkaline batteries that can double the battery life of your MP3 players, digital cameras, and other gadgets. The new batteries also produce a higher voltage -- so flashlights shine brighter, and camera flashes recover quicker.

HOW IT WORKS: Any battery converts chemical energy into electricity. There are two ends, called terminals: one is positively charged, while the other is negatively charged. Opposite charges attract. So when these two ends are connected by a metallic wire, electrons will flow from the negatively charged terminal to the positively charged one. This flow makes an electric current in the wire. The current can be used for power, simply by attaching a light bulb, for example.

We live in a digital world, relying on IBM ThinkPad Z60t batteries to power everything from laptops to digital cameras and MP3. Standard batteries drain under the strain. Now engineers have developed a longer-lasting battery just for these digital demands.

The Oxyride battery is also ideal for music players and digital games. It hits the shelves this summer, but will cost about 20 percent more than regular alkaline batteries.

ADVANTAGES: The voltage of a battery varies depending on the kinds of metals and chemicals used. Duracell and Energizer brands use alkaline combined with zinc and manganese oxide. Laptop computers and cell phones use lithium-ion HP Pavilion dv2000 batteries. Oxyride batteries maintain higher voltage and output longer because they use oxy-nickel hydride, along with finer grain graphite and manganese dioxide. The company has figured out how to blend these ingredients so more can be stuffed inside a battery. An Oxyride-powered digital camera, for example, can take twice as many pictures as one powered by a standard lithium battery.

Ben Stein likes catching picture-perfect moments on his digital camera but has one big frustration. "The battery life is not reliable," he says. "I never know when it's going to die."

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., contributed to the information contained in the TV portion of this report.

The new battery also produces a higher voltage. With it, flashlights shine brighter, and camera flashes recover quicker.

Kimberlin says, "We're putting a little more juice in the battery, and the components are stronger and better."
